Sofia Gillespie is an artist and educator whose work is centered in healing & transformation through  encounters with the natural world, human connection, and the more-than-human world. She received her B.A. cum laude in Psychology from Boston College in 2024, where she also minored in the subjects of Studio Arts & Hispanic Studies. She currently lives & works in Brooklyn, NY. 

Her artwork in ceramics has been a central and continuous thread in her artistic journey with a ceramics practice of over five years, and she continues to use the medium in experimental ways to create sculptures, decorative objects, and functional ware. The material of clay, one of malleable,  organic, and imaginative possibilities, has grounded much of her artistic inquiries, and she uses the  medium as a means of processing languages found and felt in the natural world, inner world, and more-than-human world. She utilizes glaze processes that layer, experiment, and free the possibilities  of the pieces, releasing sensations of control. 

She has maintained a collaboration with friend & artist Sophia Riordan, with over three years of collaborative performance art experience as a duo. Their work together has spanned the intersections of dance, durational performance, installation, and interactive programming.

Since graduating college, Sofia has worked in various art spaces and art programming where human  connection, healing, and creativity are centered. She currently works at Studio Shipley in Brooklyn,  NY, where she teaches workshops, manages open studios, and maintains her own artistic practice.  She has also taught in outdoor early education for two years, fostering curiosity & stewardship for the  natural world among young children. These community-oriented spaces center her focus on radical  human connection in her professional, personal, and artistic life.
